Reviews - Into Light

into_light_135"Deva Premal is a force to be reckoned with. With her classical training and intense spirituality she was destined for a career as a New Age musician. Her albums are recorded with the help of her life partner, Miten, showing peace in both her personal and artistic life. The love and life they share become immediately apparent in the harmony that is in their work.

"German–born Premal was raised with equal weight placed on the study of music and spirituality—by age five she was already reciting mantras. She met Miten on a trip to India, and it was he who helped her to find her singing voice by encouraging her to sing backup vocals for him. Their shared philosophy remains that everybody with a voice can sing, and everyone with a breath in their body can experience divinity, which they continue to promote in music that is gorgeous, both spiritually and sonically.

"The pair have been touring together for almost 20 years and have been heralded by the likes of the Dalai Lama, who said they create "beautiful, beautiful music." Their recent release, Into Light: The Meditation Music of Deva Premal, is consistent with past releases in that it promotes inner peace, but this album encourages focusing on the light from within during a guided meditation. The album begins with the stunning Lokah Samasta, a mantra that translates to "May all beings in the universe be happy." She begins with low, hypnotizing harmonies that emulate a breath in your ear, calming and regulating your own breathing, before launching into the next part of the meditation, a segment with gorgeous soaring vocals.

"One of Premal’s strongest suits is her crystalline voice and her inherent awareness of it. With Miten’s production, she plays off of her higher registers using low, bassy instrumentation. On Illumina, warm acoustic strings create balance with their added richness, as do the additional harmonies. The album closes with Gayatri Mantra, the Vedic mantra recited during the sacred thread ceremony, when the concept of Brahman, or the infinite reality, is introduced as a rite of passage. As a closing song, this mantra symbolizes the knowledge the listener has gained through this guided meditation, and Premal’s hushed tone is appropriately reverential."
